Caeserean Section

A caesarian section could be performed on a pregnant patient either by choice or out of necessity. Emergency caesarian is done during labor. However elective cesarean section is performed on the basis of an obstetrical or medical indication or at the request of the pregnant patient.
Elective cesarean section is also known as planned cesarean section and are performed for reasons including placenta previa, multiple pregnancy, history of previous cesarean section, abnormal presentation, known obstruction of labor etc.
There is a boom in cases of Elective cesarean section around the globe, a boom the UN health agency observes, is jeopardizing women’s health. In a report the agency observes that Elective cesarean section raised the risk of complications for the mother and that the practice had reached “epidemic proportion’ in many countries worldwide’. Indeed available statistics indicate that there is as high incidence of Elective cesarean section in some parts of the world as 50 per cent. The highest incidences are reported in Asia and are fueled by such factors as parents wanting to choose when their babies should be born out of superstitious reasons, fear of litigation within the medical fraternity and even because physicians and institutions may benefit by reducing night time and weekend work, that an inappropriate incentive exists to suggest elective surgery.Women undergoing C-sections that are not medically necessary are more likely to die or be admitted into intensive care units, require blood transfusions or encounter complications that lead to hysterectomies. Yet an increasing number of women request this procedure. The relative safety of the operation leads people to think it’s as safe as vaginal birth but this is unlikely to be the case.
